The Gharchola Kolam - Purple

This saree begins in the morning.

With the pulli kolam. Dots placed without second thought, lines finding their way through them. Something you’ve seen all your life, without ever needing it explained. That quiet certainty sits in the motifs across the body.

And then, there is the grid.

The zari squares carry a clear gharchola influence. A pattern language that comes from the North, from communities that moved, travelled, and eventually settled in Tamil Nadu. They brought their weaves, their ways of seeing design, their sense of structure.

But what is interesting is not that it came from elsewhere.

It’s what happened after.

Over time, it stopped feeling separate. It softened into the visual language here. Into what we now recognise without thinking twice. The gharchola grid and the pulli kolam don’t sit as contrasts. They sit like they’ve learnt to exist together, naturally, without needing to be forced into harmony.

That coexistence is what this saree holds.

The purple carries it all.

It’s a shade with depth, slightly unexpected, shifting with light. It doesn’t try to be easy. It holds its ground, letting the zari speak through it without ever getting lost.

And then the border steadies everything.

A double pet, rich with zari, with that contrast green running through it. The green feels grounding. Like the earth beneath a kolam. Like the base that allows everything else to exist.
